WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature that will allow users to block messages from unknown accounts. This feature, once implemented, is expected to enhance user safety by preventing unwanted messages from reaching users’ inboxes. Additionally, blocking messages from unknown senders could also lead to an improvement in the overall performance of the messaging platform on users’ devices.
Feature tracker WABetaInfo recently spotted a new “Block unknown account messages” toggle in the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.17.24. This toggle, located under the Privacy > Advanced menu in the settings app, suggests that users will soon have the option to prevent messages from unknown accounts from appearing in their chats.
Protecting User Accounts and Smartphone Performance
The description of the feature implies that WhatsApp will automatically block messages from unknown senders if they exceed a certain volume. This proactive measure aims to keep users’ accounts safe from potential security threats while ensuring that the app’s performance is not negatively impacted by unwanted messages. In contrast to WhatsApp’s approach, Signal restricts messages from unknown accounts by default. When a user receives a message from an unidentified sender, Signal prompts the user to either Accept, Block, or Report the conversation. This added layer of security helps prevent unwanted messages from reaching users’ inboxes and gives users the option to control their interactions with unknown contacts.
New Like Reactions for Status Updates
In addition to the message blocking feature, WhatsApp has also introduced the ability to “like” status updates on the messaging platform. This new feature allows users to quickly react to photo, video, and text stories uploaded by other users. Adding a heart emoji to a status update serves as a simple yet effective way for users to express their appreciation for the content shared by their contacts.
Rolling Out Slowly to Users
Although the feature is currently available in the latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android, it is expected to roll out gradually to users. Some beta testers have already reported seeing the new heart icon for reacting to status updates, indicating that the feature is being introduced in stages. Users can expect to see a list of contacts who have reacted to their stories, similar to the functionality of Instagram stories.
