Recently, Riot announced that the console version of Valorant will be entering a limited beta phase starting on June 14th. This beta will be available on the PS5 and Xbox Series X / S consoles, opening up the popular tactical shooter to a new audience. Players in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Europe, and Japan will have the opportunity to participate in the beta, with the possibility of a global rollout in the near future.
Gameplay Features
Riot has stated that the console versions of Valorant will feature “custom-built gameplay” designed to provide a satisfying experience for players using controllers. However, crossplay between console and PC will not be available in order to maintain the integrity of the competitive gameplay. Despite this, the game will support cross-progression, allowing players to carry over their skins and progression between platforms seamlessly.
Production director Arnar Hrafn Gylfason emphasized the importance of ensuring that Valorant’s core gameplay feels natural on a controller. The team was committed to delivering a console experience that captures the essence of the game while maintaining its competitive integrity. Gylfason stated, “We were adamant that Valorant’s core, competitive gameplay must feel natural on a controller. And – if we couldn’t deliver on that gameplay promise – we had to be prepared to walk away from it. We hope we nailed it, but ultimately, our players will have the final say.”
In addition to the console beta, Riot also announced a mobile version of Valorant in 2021. While there has been little information released about the mobile version since the initial announcement, the expansion of Valorant to new platforms demonstrates Riot’s commitment to reaching a wider audience and providing diverse gaming experiences for players.
Overall, the introduction of the console beta for Valorant represents an exciting development for fans of the game. With the promise of custom-built gameplay, cross-progression, and a focus on competitive integrity, players can look forward to experiencing Valorant in a new and engaging way on their console of choice. As the beta rolls out to new regions and feedback is collected from players, the future of Valorant on consoles looks promising.
