The Australian government is currently investigating claims made by a hacking group called ShinyHunters regarding the theft of customer details from Ticketmaster. The group alleges that they have accessed the information of 560 million customers, including names, addresses, phone numbers, and partial credit card details. This stolen data was reportedly put up for sale for US$500,000 in a one-time offer on an online forum. The Australian National Office of Cyber Security is working to understand the extent of the incident and is in communication with Ticketmaster to gather more information. The FBI has also offered its assistance to Australian authorities in dealing with this cybersecurity threat.
ShinyHunters gained notoriety in 2020-21 for releasing large amounts of customer records from over 60 companies, according to the US Department of Justice. One of their members, Sebastien Raoult, a French hacker, was recently sentenced to three years in prison and ordered to pay over $5 million in restitution for his involvement in hacking activities. The extensive hacking carried out by ShinyHunters caused millions of dollars in losses to victim companies and additional immeasurable losses to hundreds of millions of individuals whose data was sold to other criminals.
The cybersecurity professor Katina Michael from the University of Wollongong has expressed concerns over the increasing number of people being impacted by hacking incidents and the severe consequences that follow. She warned that the number of hacked individuals could potentially reach up to one billion in the future if adequate measures are not taken. Michael also highlighted the lack of sufficient protection measures from governments, companies, and consumers, such as the implementation of basic security protocols like two-factor authentication.
