Recently, Elon Musk announced a new approach to boost X subscriptions by reintroducing verification badges to users with substantial followings on the platform. The criteria set by Musk dictates that accounts with over 2500 verified subscriber followers will receive X Premium features for free, while accounts with over 5000 verified followers will be granted access to X Premium+ at no cost.
Musk’s decision to bring back verification badges stems from the belief that showcasing verified accounts with a large following will encourage more users to subscribe to X. Additionally, the integration of Grok, an AI chatbot, into the X Premium tier aims to attract more users and emphasize the exclusivity of having a verification badge.
Musk’s Strategy to Drive Revenue
Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter in 2022 introduced a shift towards subscription-based revenue generation. With a vision to derive half of X’s revenue from subscriptions, Musk has been implementing various tactics to increase X Premium uptake and ultimately boost the app’s financial performance.
Despite Musk’s efforts to enhance X Premium features and introduce innovative AI technologies like Grok, the subscription uptake has been below expectations. Currently, X Premium reportedly has fewer than a million subscribers out of X’s extensive user base of 550 million. The introduction of Grok has also failed to attract significant interest, highlighting the challenges X faces in monetizing its services.
The dilemma lies in the perceived value of X Premium add-on features among users. While verification badges hold symbolic value, the additional features bundled with X Premium may not resonate with the broader user base. This poses a significant obstacle in driving subscription uptake and increasing revenue for the platform.
The Future of X Subscription Model
As X strives to expand its subscription base and solidify its revenue streams, the integration of verification badges and AI technologies like Grok could potentially attract more users and stimulate interest in premium features. However, the challenge remains in convincing non-Premium users of the value proposition offered by the add-on elements of the subscription model.
Elon Musk’s strategy to revive Twitter verification badges and incentivize high-profile users with free access to premium features represents a bold move to drive subscription uptake and generate additional revenue for X. However, the success of this strategy hinges on the ability to demonstrate the value of X Premium features beyond verification badges and AI technologies, ultimately enticing more users to subscribe to the platform.
