Generative artificial intelligence (AI) stands at a provocative crossroads, teetering between revolutionary potential and ethical quagmire. While its capability to produce creative works is acknowledged, serious concerns persist regarding its methodologies and impacts. This article explores the duality of generative AI, emphasizing a hands-on experience from a recent hackathon focused on its applications for journalism.
At first glance, the allure of generative AI is hard to miss. The technology can synthesize texts, images, and other forms of media, thereby allowing for unprecedented creative exploration. However, beneath the surface lie significant concerns that merit scrutiny. One of the most pressing issues is the mode of training for these algorithms. Often, they ingest vast amounts of creative content, frequently without the consent of the original creators. This practice raises ethical questions about ownership and respect for intellectual property.
Moreover, biases are another critical downside that many algorithms harbored during their training processes. The datasets themselves can reflect existing societal biases, resulting in outputs that perpetuate stereotypes or discriminate against marginalized groups. These ethical dilemmas are compounded by the environmental toll associated with generative AI’s training demands, which require substantial computational resources, thereby consuming excessive energy and water.

During a recent session that I attended, the group focused on understanding how generative AI could benefit journalists. Each event commences with a brainstorming session where participants propose project ideas that the group gradually narrows down to a single concept. Notable proposals included utilizing AI to track political discourse on platforms like TikTok, creating automated freedom of information requests, and summarizing local court hearing videos to enhance local news coverage.
Ultimately, the group decided to develop a prototype tool aimed at helping reporters sift through AI research papers on Arxiv, a widely-used repository for preprints. My input during this session, particularly regarding the significance of reviewing relevant literature, likely influenced their final decision.
As the ideation phase concluded, the coding team began to translate their vision into a working model. With the assistance of the OpenAI API, they created a word embedding—a numerical representation of words and their meanings—focusing on AI papers residing in Arxiv. This representation facilitates the analysis of data to identify relevant research and uncover connections among various disciplines.
Taking it a step further, the developers employed another word embedding derived from Reddit discussions alongside a Google News search. This strategy resulted in a visualization that situates research papers within the context of concurrent discussions and news articles. The end product, dubbed AI News Hound, serves as an exploratory tool that highlights how large language models can innovate the process of information retrieval and synthesis.
While the prototype remains a rough version of a polished product, its functionality illustrates the transformative power of generative AI in journalism. As evidenced by the tool’s ability to surface pertinent papers related to an identified term—such as “AI agents”—AI News Hound exemplifies the potential for technology to enhance critical research capabilities in journalism.
The journey of generative AI is fraught with challenges and unforeseen consequences. However, initiatives like the Sundai Club reflect a burgeoning awareness of these complexities. By harnessing the capabilities of AI through ethical frameworks and community-driven approaches, there is a possibility of maximizing the benefits while minimizing the risks.
