The wind turbines in India’s Thar desert serve as a crucial source of green energy for the country, which is the world’s most populous nation. However, the people living in the vicinity of these turbines have raised concerns about the negative impacts they face. This situation highlights the challenging task faced by India as it strives to increase its non-fossil fuel capacity to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change.

Despite efforts to combat climate change, individuals residing in areas used for renewable energy production feel that their needs have been disregarded in favor of the greater good. In western Rajasthan state, where most of the Thar desert is located, the local community has experienced a loss of grazing lands and harm to sacred groves known as “orans”. These oases have been preserved by the community for generations and play a vital role in sustaining their livestock-based economy.

The construction of wind farms in the desert region has led to disruptions in the traditional farming practices of the local herders. The heavy trucks used during the construction process have damaged water sources, reduced grasslands, and exacerbated the dryness of the land. This has resulted in a decline in milk production and a loss of community grazing land, impacting the livelihoods of farmers like Nena Ram.

While Indian conglomerates such as the Adani Group and Suzlon claim to support India’s transition to renewable energy and provide assistance to affected communities, local farmers argue that the construction of wind turbines has encroached upon their grazing lands. The lack of consultation with the community has led to discontent among residents, who have seen their land repurposed for energy production, leaving them with inadequate access to essential resources.

In districts like Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, where wind farms are prevalent, the local population experiences frequent power cuts despite being surrounded by power infrastructure. This disparity in access to electricity becomes particularly challenging during the scorching summer months when temperatures soar to extreme levels. The push for renewable energy development has not translated into improved services for the residents, leading to frustration and hardship.

The rapid expansion of renewable energy plants in the desert region has raised concerns about the impact on biodiversity. Locally revered species, such as the critically endangered Great Indian Bustard, are facing extinction due to collisions with power lines and wind turbines. The installation of overhead power lines has significantly increased the mortality rate of these birds, prompting calls for better conservation efforts.

The local villagers, who have witnessed the decline in biodiversity and the disruption of their traditional way of life, feel marginalized by the rapid development of renewable energy infrastructure. Despite the government’s ambitious targets for non-fossil fuel power capacity, the consequences for the local ecosystem and livelihoods cannot be overlooked. The plea of the community to protect their environment and preserve their cultural heritage must be taken into account in future policy decisions.

The case of renewable energy development in India’s Thar desert sheds light on the complex challenges faced in transitioning to a green economy. While the expansion of wind farms and other forms of renewable energy is crucial for mitigating climate change, the adverse effects on local communities and biodiversity underscore the importance of considering the social and environmental impacts of such projects. Balancing the need for sustainable energy sources with the protection of ecosystems and livelihoods remains a critical task that requires careful planning and inclusive decision-making processes.
