Recently, Docusign made headlines with the announcement of its acquisition of Lexion, an AI-powered agreement management software provider, in an all-cash deal valued at $165 million. This move is not only significant for Docusign but also marks a strategic shift in the Intelligent Agreement Management (IAM) space.

The acquisition of Lexion by Docusign is aimed at solidifying the company’s presence in the IAM sector, which it ventured into a month ago. However, it is important to note that Lexion will not be disappearing anytime soon. Docusign has assured that Lexion’s products will continue to be available and enhanced for the benefit of the numerous enterprise customers who are already using the software.

Founded in 2019 by Gaurav Oberoi, Emad Elwany, and James Baird, Lexion operates out of the Allen Institute for AI (AI2) in Seattle. The company provides a natural language processing system that transforms contract text into structured data, which is then stored in a repository equipped with search, reporting, alerts, permissions, and integrations. Lexion competes with other players in the market such as Cortical, Pactum, LinkSquares, Evisort, Contractbook, and Agiloft.

Allan Thygesen, the Chief Executive of Docusign, emphasized the shared vision of smarter agreement management between the two companies. He expressed his belief that the combined AI-powered innovation would bring increased value, productivity, and simplicity to their customers. Thygesen stressed that the strategic acquisition underscores Docusign’s dedication to delivering IAM solutions that transform agreement data into insights, expedite contract reviews, enhance productivity, and ultimately drive revenue growth.

Future Enhancements to Docusign’s IAM Platform

Docusign is already promoting the additional capabilities that its IAM platform will offer once Lexion’s technology is integrated. These include providing customers with deeper insights into their agreements, introducing an AI-powered plugin for Microsoft Word to aid in contract creation, simplifying information retrieval in agreements through a Q&A experience, and streamlining document intake processes via email, Microsoft Teams, or Slack.
