Meta recently announced that they have updated their artificial intelligence (AI) content detection label from “Made with AI” to “AI Info” in order to provide more context about images and videos edited using AI tools. This change comes after Instagram influencers and photographers criticized the previous label as being misleading and not aligned with people’s expectations.

The purpose of the new “AI Info” label is to eliminate confusion among users when it comes to identifying AI-generated content. By providing more context, Meta hopes that users will have a better understanding of the content they are viewing. The label will also help users distinguish between original content and content that has been edited using AI tools.

Verification and Visibility

While some users have already started seeing the new label, it is important to note that Gadgets 360 was unable to verify its presence. However, Meta mentioned that the new labels will gradually become visible to all users in the coming days. Users can click on the AI label to gain more context about the content, which opens a bottom sheet explaining that generative AI may have been used to create or edit the post.

Meta uses industry-standard indicators, such as the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) and the International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) standards, to detect whether content has been created using AI tools. The company also highlighted that they will continue to work with other companies in the industry to improve their AI labelling process.

Despite the efforts to improve AI content detection, there are still challenges that need to be addressed. Gadgets 360 found that a significant number of AI-generated images are still going undetected by Meta’s tools. There is also concern that using the “AI Info” label to flag images that have been retouched using AI might dilute its real purpose of identifying deepfakes and manipulative AI content.

Meta’s decision to update the AI content detection label to “AI Info” is a step in the right direction towards providing users with more transparency and context regarding AI-generated content. However, ongoing collaboration with industry partners and continuous improvement of the AI labelling process will be necessary to ensure the accuracy and effectiveness of content detection in the future.
