Against The Storm’s latest update brought a significant addition to the game – the River Kelpie, a “legendary water demon” that can mesmerize villagers in rain-slick settlements. While this new feature adds an intriguing element to the gameplay, what truly captured my attention was the ability to zoom out 66% further than before.
The expanded zoom capability in the game resonated with me on a personal level. As a fan of management games, I often find myself feeling claustrophobic within the confines of the game interface. The inability to see the entire playing field forces me to frantically navigate around the screen to keep track of all the game elements. The newfound ability to zoom out further in Against The Storm offers a sense of liberation and control that was previously lacking.
The desire for a wider zoom range can be traced back to my experience with Supreme Commander in 2007. The game set a standard for me with its ability to zoom out until every unit was a mere speck on the screen. Since then, any game that limits my zoom capabilities feels restrictive and frustrating. Against The Storm’s latest update may not reach the grand scale of Supreme Commander, but it marks a step in the right direction.
Beyond the enhanced zoom feature, the 1.3 update for Against The Storm introduces a host of quality-of-life and balance improvements. Resource tooltips have been refined for better clarity, allowing players to make more informed decisions during gameplay. Additionally, the option to mark trees individually for chopping streamlines resource management. Moreover, various upgrades now offer more potent buffs, enhancing the strategic depth of the game.
It is worth noting that with the new update, saved but incomplete settlements will no longer be accessible. To compensate for this inconvenience, players will receive Citadel Resources and Royal Resupply. Alternatively, players who wish to finish their ongoing settlements can revert the game back to version 1.2 by accessing the beta branch menu on Steam. However, this option will only be available for an additional week, urging players to act swiftly.
Against The Storm’s latest update exemplifies the developer’s commitment to enhancing the gaming experience for players. The increased zoom capabilities, alongside various quality-of-life improvements, contribute to a more immersive and enjoyable gameplay environment. As players adapt to the changes introduced in the update, they are encouraged to explore the new features and embrace the evolving landscape of Against The Storm.
