However, after testing the Engwe P20 for a month in Amsterdam, it becomes clear that there are some significant drawbacks to this budget e-bike.
One of the main issues with the Engwe P20 is the tuning of the torque sensor. There is a noticeable delay in the pedal assist, especially when starting off or climbing hills. This delay can make it challenging to get the bike up to speed quickly, and since it is a single-speed bike, there is no option to shift gears for easier pedaling. Additionally, once the bike reaches speeds around 14mph, the pedaling becomes uncomfortable due to the high cadence required.
The Engwe P20 has a top speed of 15.5mph, which may be adequate for casual riders but can be frustrating for those looking to commute longer distances. Unlocking the motor for higher speeds can be done through a workaround, but this can lead to performance issues and reduced battery life. The throttle also suffers from delays, further impacting the overall riding experience.
Despite its performance issues, the Engwe P20 does have some positive aspects. The hydraulic disc brakes provide reliable stopping power, and the bike’s geometry offers stability and control while riding. The folding mechanism, while not as quick as advertised, is relatively straightforward once you get the hang of it. The bike also comes with integrated fenders, a rear rack, and front and rear lights, making it suitable for city commuting.
The Engwe P20 is a budget-friendly option for those looking to dabble in the world of electric bikes. While it may have some performance issues and limitations in speed and range, it still offers decent value for the price. However, for riders looking for a more optimized and refined riding experience, it may be worth investing in a higher-end model. Ultimately, the Engwe P20 serves as a reminder that you often get what you pay for in the world of electric bikes.
