Apple’s upcoming plans for its AI capabilities were recently unveiled by Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter for Bloomberg. The tech giant is set to showcase a more practical approach to AI at WWDC 2024, focusing on useful features rather than flashy gimmicks.

Rumors suggest that Apple is in talks with OpenAI for a partnership that will allow chatbots to integrate more deeply into its operating systems. Additionally, negotiations with Google for a similar integration with Gemini are still ongoing. The company is also exploring a possible collaboration with Anthropic. These partnerships highlight Apple’s desire to enhance its AI offerings through strategic alliances with key players in the field.

One of the key features that Apple is expected to announce is a “smart recap” function, which will summarize missed texts, notifications, web pages, news articles, documents, notes, and other forms of media. This feature aims to simplify the user experience, especially when dealing with a large volume of notifications on iOS devices. It is reminiscent of Microsoft’s Recall feature, which leverages AI to track user actions on computers.

Apart from the smart recap feature, Apple is also rumored to introduce AI-generated transcripts for the Voice Memo app. This enhancement will be particularly useful for tasks like referencing interview recordings or recording lessons for educational purposes. Additionally, Apple devices are expected to receive AI-powered improvements to on-device Spotlight search, internet searches with Safari, and writing suggestions for emails and texts.

Apple aims to perform as many AI tasks as possible locally on its devices. However, for more complex processes, the company will offload processing to its own M2 Ultra-based servers. This hybrid approach ensures that users can benefit from advanced AI features without compromising on performance.

Apple may introduce a more natural-sounding voice for Siri, based on the company’s own large language models. Additionally, better Siri functionality on the Apple Watch is expected. These enhancements will make interactions with Siri more seamless and intuitive for users.

In addition to AI-related updates, Apple may announce an iOS 18 feature that allows users to change their app icons to different colors. This feature, although already achievable through the iOS Shortcuts app, is expected to provide a more user-friendly solution. Furthermore, users may soon have the ability to customize the arrangement of app icons on their home screens, breaking away from the traditional top-to-bottom, left-to-right layout imposed by iOS.

Overall, Apple’s AI strategy at WWDC 2024 indicates a shift towards practical, user-focused features that enhance the overall user experience across its devices. With strategic partnerships, local processing capabilities, and AI-driven enhancements, Apple is poised to revolutionize the way users interact with their devices in the coming years.
