AMD had initially planned to launch its new Zen 5 processors on July 31st but has now announced a one to two-week delay. The highly anticipated 16-core, 32-thread Ryzen 9 9950X, touted as the “world’s most powerful desktop consumer processor,” will now be released on August 15th instead. This decision was made “out of an abundance of caution,” according to a statement from spokesperson Stacy MacDiarmid.

The delay was not caused by issues with the actual chips themselves, but rather due to some units not going through all of the necessary testing procedures. AMD wants to ensure that all chips meet their full quality expectations before being released to the market. As a result, the Ryzen 7 9700X and Ryzen 5 9600X will now be available on August 8th.

In a statement, AMD computing and graphics SVP Jack Huynh emphasized the company’s commitment to providing a high-quality experience for every Ryzen user. Huynh expressed gratitude for the excitement surrounding the Ryzen 9000 series processors and assured that the delay is only temporary to guarantee the best user experience.

AMD’s decision to delay the launch of the Zen 5 processors may have been influenced by Intel’s recent struggles with its 13th and 14th Gen desktop processors. Intel has been facing issues with stability, particularly with processors like the Core i9-13900K and i9-14900K. Customers have reported instances of unstable chips, and Intel is working on a patch that won’t be available until August.

In addition to the desktop processors, AMD is also preparing to launch its Zen 5 laptop chips, codenamed Strix Point. The Ryzen AI 9 300 lineup, which features high-performance chips like the Ryzen AI 9 HX 375, is expected to offer a more powerful experience with a 55 TOPS NPU.
