The recent release of Risk of Rain 2: Seekers of the Storm has left a sour taste in the mouths of many dedicated fans of the co-op roguelite game. With an overwhelming 79% ‘mostly negative’ rating on Steam, it is clear that the latest DLC has not been well-received by the community. The feedback from players has been overwhelmingly negative, with reports of numerous bugs and issues plaguing the game since its release.
One of the major complaints from players is the abundance of bugs that have disrupted the core gameplay systems of the base game. Gearbox, the studio that acquired Risk of Rain from Hopoo Games in 2022, has acknowledged these issues and released a blog post highlighting the known issues they are actively working on. Some of the reported problems include a boss named Mithrix becoming invincible, as well as a peculiar bug that allowed players to get stuck while interacting with the environment.
Co-creator Duncan Drummond expressed mixed feelings about the situation on Xitter, stating that while it is exciting to see new content being added to the game, it is disheartening to witness the struggles of the new development team in real-time. He empathized with both the fans who have lost functionality in their beloved game and the developers at Gearbox who are facing immense pressure to address the issues promptly. Despite the challenges, Drummond remains optimistic about Gearbox’s commitment to resolving the issues and listening to player feedback.
Lead programmer, co-designer, and concept artist Jeffrey Hunt shared his thoughts on the DLC release, acknowledging the limitations faced by the development team in terms of time and resources. While praising the efforts of the team, Hunt expressed disappointment in seeing rushed changes potentially undermining the quality of their work. The collaboration with Gearbox on previous DLCs had been fruitful, but the current situation has presented unforeseen challenges for the team.
Randolph P. Itchford, a representative from Gearbox, reassured fans on Xitter that efforts were being made to address the issues and compensate for the disruptions caused by the release of Seekers of the Storm. Despite the current setbacks, the player base has generally been satisfied with Gearbox’s management of the game thus far. The addition of free content and continuous updates had previously indicated a positive direction for the game. However, the recent acquisition of Gearbox by Rockstar parent company Take-Two has raised concerns about the future trajectory of the studio.
The launch of Risk of Rain 2: Seekers of the Storm has been marred by technical challenges and player dissatisfaction. While there is hope for improvement and rectification of the issues, it is evident that the release fell short of expectations. The development team at Gearbox faces a daunting task of regaining the trust of the community and delivering a stable and enjoyable gaming experience in the future.
