Brazil’s telecommunications regulator recently announced the suspension of Elon Musk’s X social network in the country. This decision was made in compliance with a court order issued by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who has been engaged in a longstanding feud with the billionaire investor.
The primary reason behind the suspension of X in Brazil was the platform’s failure to meet a court-imposed deadline to appoint a legal representative in the country. This led to the judge ordering the suspension, citing the need for hate speech regulations on social media platforms. Musk, on the other hand, accused Justice Alexandre de Moraes of unjustified censorship, claiming that X was being shut down, which he referred to as the “#1 source of truth in Brazil.”
The suspension of X in Brazil could potentially have a significant impact on the platform, as it stands to lose one of its largest and most lucrative markets. This comes at a time when Musk has been facing challenges with advertising revenue for the platform. Additionally, the feud has resulted in the freezing of satellite internet provider Starlink’s bank accounts in Brazil, which is a subsidiary of Musk’s aerospace company, SpaceX.
Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered X to be suspended in Brazil until it complied with all court orders, which included the payment of substantial fines and the appointment of a local representative as required by Brazilian law. Telecommunication companies were instructed to cease carrying X’s traffic to effectively close the platform in the country. Users attempting to access X via virtual private networks (VPNs) would face fines for circumventing the suspension order.
In this dispute, Justice Alexandre de Moraes has received support from a majority of Brazil’s Supreme Court judges, including Chief Justice Roberto Barroso. Despite owning a significant stake in X and SpaceX, Musk has been vocal in his criticism of the court’s decisions, referring to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva as a “lapdog” of Moraes and accusing the judge of being a “dictator.”
The battle between Elon Musk and Brazilian authorities over the suspension of X social network highlights the complex relationship between tech giants and governmental regulations.
