WhatsApp is reportedly in the process of developing a new artificial intelligence (AI) feature that will allow users to engage in hands-free verbal conversations with Meta AI, the AI chatbot integrated into the app. This feature represents a significant advancement in user experience and opens up new possibilities for communication within the messaging platform.

Previously, it was rumored that WhatsApp users would only be able to send voice notes to Meta AI, enabling one-way verbal communication. However, the latest information suggests that the AI chatbot will also be able to respond verbally to users. The voice mode feature is expected to include several voice options for users to choose from, although the specific differences between them remain unknown.

Insights from WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo indicate that the voice mode feature for Meta AI has been identified in WhatsApp beta versions for both Android and iOS. Despite its presence in the beta builds, the feature is currently not accessible to users, as the development team continues to refine its functionality. This means that individuals enrolled in the Google Play Beta program will have to wait before they can test the Meta AI voice mode.

According to screenshots shared by WABetaInfo, the Meta AI voice mode interface includes a new voice icon represented by an audio waveform located next to the text input field within the chat. Tapping on this icon opens a bottom sheet displaying the Meta AI logo at the top, a circular design comprised of multiple bubbles in the middle, and the message “Hi, how can I help” with an enlarged audio waveform icon at the bottom, indicating that the AI is actively listening.

Additionally, the screenshots suggest that the voice mode feature may offer users a selection of up to 10 different voices to choose from. While the specific distinctions between these voices remain ambiguous, they could potentially include variations in accents, energy levels, or tonal qualities. It is unlikely that these voices will support multiple languages.

Furthermore, users may have the option to enable captions and transcriptions using text-to-speech technology. This feature appears to document the entire verbal conversation and convert it into text format, allowing users to reference the exchange at a later time. However, the exact timeline for the public release of this feature remains unknown.

WhatsApp’s development of the Meta AI voice mode feature represents a significant step towards enhancing user interactions within the platform. By enabling hands-free verbal conversations with the AI chatbot, the messaging app is poised to offer a more dynamic and engaging communication experience for its users.
