Data centers are an essential part of the infrastructure for modern society, but their environmental impact is often overlooked. In the suburbs of northeast Paris, a giant terra-cotta-colored warehouse houses one of France’s newest data centers. This data center, known as PA10, is operated by the American company Equinix and plays a crucial role in providing the necessary computing power for various applications, including AI training.

One of the innovative features of the PA10 data center is its commitment to energy efficiency and heat reuse. By converting hot air waste into water and piping it to a local energy system run by the French utility company Engie, Equinix is able to export 6.6 thermal megawatts of heat out of the building. This heat is equivalent to the energy needed to power over 1,000 homes.

Imane Erraji, the site’s data center engineer, describes the project as a “win-win situation” for both Equinix and the local suburb of Seine-Saint-Denis. By utilizing the heat generated by the data center for local energy needs, Equinix is able to reduce the workload on its cooling systems. At the same time, the city benefits from a cost-effective source of heat that is produced locally. This partnership has been cemented by a €2 million investment from the city of Paris, with Equinix committing to providing energy free-of-charge for the next 15 years.

While the heat-reuse project at the PA10 data center has been praised for its environmental benefits, some critics argue that it is a distraction from the larger issues at hand. France has a relatively low-carbon electricity mix, with a significant portion of its energy generated by nuclear power. However, the sheer amount of land, water, and electricity consumed by data centers remains a contentious issue. Anne-Laure Ligozat, a computer science professor at France’s National School of Computer Science for Industry and Business, points out that the focus should be on reducing the number of data centers and their overall energy consumption.

As the demand for computing power continues to grow, data centers will play an increasingly crucial role in powering our digital world. It is imperative that we address the environmental impact of these facilities and work towards more sustainable solutions. While projects like the one at the PA10 data center in Paris are a step in the right direction, more comprehensive efforts are needed to mitigate the long-term effects on our planet. Ultimately, a balance must be struck between technological advancement and environmental responsibility to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.
