Following a faulty software update that caused technological havoc worldwide, airlines such as Delta Air Lines have been struggling to restore operations even two days later. The repercussions of this seemingly small error have been felt by passengers and airline employees alike, with total cancellations within, into, or out of the U.S. on Sunday amounting to a whopping 1,461 flights, according to FlightAware data. Delta Air Lines and United Airlines bore the brunt of these cancellations, disrupting travel plans for thousands of passengers.
In an effort to keep passengers informed, Delta’s Chief Executive Ed Bastian issued a message to customers on Sunday, expressing his regret over the ongoing flight cancellations. He revealed that more than 3,500 Delta and Delta Connection flights had to be canceled as a result of the system outage caused by the software glitch. Bastian acknowledged that the issue was exacerbated by the fact that the malfunction occurred during one of the busiest travel weekends of the summer, when Delta’s booked loads exceeded 90%, severely limiting their ability to re-accommodate affected passengers.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg stepped in to address the situation, speaking directly to Delta’s CEO about the high number of cancellations experienced by the airline since Friday. The Department of Transportation issued a statement reminding Delta of its obligation to provide refunds to passengers whose flights had been canceled and who opted not to be rebooked on later flights. Buttigieg emphasized the importance of timely reimbursements for food and overnight accommodations for affected passengers, as well as the provision of adequate customer service assistance to all passengers impacted by the disruptions.
