Factorio’s highly anticipated Space Age expansion has been in development for several years, and fans can now rejoice as a release date has been announced. Set to launch this October alongside a significant 2.0 update, the expansion will come with a price tag equivalent to that of the base game. Despite the cost, it appears that players can expect a wealth of new content and features to explore.

Last summer, Wube Software unveiled the Space Age expansion, introducing five new planets each with unique resources, technologies, and challenges to overcome. Players will now have the ability to construct space platforms beyond the original game’s boundaries, requiring them to defend against asteroids by either destroying them or extracting valuable resources from them. The operational platforms will facilitate interplanetary cargo transportation, creating a dynamic gameplay experience.

Among the new planets featured in Space Age is Vulcanus, a volcanic world abundant in Tungsten, enabling advanced metallurgical advancements through the smelting of iron and copper using molten lava. Fulgora, on the other hand, is a desolate planet plagued by violent lightning storms that can be harnessed for electrical power, especially in conjunction with the newly introduced material, Holmium. Additionally, players can explore a swampy planet called Gleba, rich in fruit and biochemical resources, while a mysterious fifth planet promises unique gameplay opportunities set amidst its dark and frigid landscape far from the warmth of the sun.

In addition to the new planets, Space Age brings elevated train tracks for traversing challenging terrain and optimizing rail networks. Players can expect new enemy types and defensive strategies, as well as a tiered quality system for items, entities, and equipment. Advancing through five quality levels, from Normal to Legendary, will grant various bonuses such as increased range, faster crafting times, or other valuable advantages.

With Wube comparing the scope of Space Age to the original game, boasting over 80 hours of content for seasoned players to enjoy, the $35 price point for the expansion seems reasonable. Those hesitant about the cost will be relieved to know that the 2.0 update will be available for free to all players upon its release alongside the expansion. This update will introduce various new features, including a revamped fluid system, remote viewing capabilities, and enhancements to train controls, combinators, and worker robot artificial intelligence.

Factorio fans can mark their calendars for October 21st, when both the Space Age expansion and update 2.0 will become available. With a wealth of new content, gameplay mechanics, and immersive worlds to explore, the Space Age expansion promises to deliver an exciting and challenging experience for both new and seasoned players alike. Prepare to embark on a thrilling journey through the cosmos in Factorio’s latest expansion.
