TikTok has recently announced the implementation of additional generative AI transparency measures on its platform. One of the key changes includes new labels on content that has been modified by AI using external tools. TikTok is working with the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) to establish a new process for identifying AI in content that has been uploaded from other sources. This means that videos uploaded to TikTok will now be scanned for AI markers under the C2PA project, and will be highlighted as such in-stream when detected.

These new measures aim to give users more oversight into the use of AI tools, both internal and external, on the platform. By providing direct transparency on clips created with the platform’s own generative AI tools, TikTok is taking a step towards limiting misinformation and misunderstanding. However, it should be noted that not all generative AI projects are signed up with the C2PA project, which means that not all AI-generated content will necessarily include the required metadata markers. Despite this limitation, it is important to continue enhancing AI transparency to combat the rising tide of AI-generated content infiltrating the web.

Collaboration with MediaWise

In addition to the new AI labels, TikTok is also collaborating with MediaWise to develop new generative AI media literacy campaigns. These campaigns aim to help users better understand and identify AI content on the platform. TikTok plans to release 12 videos throughout the year that highlight universal media literacy skills while explaining how tools like AI-generated content labels can provide further context to users. A campaign will also be launched to raise awareness around AI labeling and potentially misleading AI-generated content.

The increasing prevalence of AI content on the web highlights the importance of improving awareness of AI-generated fakes and their potential misuse. As AI technology becomes more sophisticated, there is a growing concern about the spread of misinformation and manipulation through AI-generated content. This is particularly important in the context of upcoming elections, where AI fakes could be used to influence public opinion and voter behavior. By implementing these transparency measures, TikTok is taking a proactive step in combating the misuse of AI and improving AI literacy among its users.

The implementation of new generative AI transparency measures on TikTok is a positive step towards enhancing user awareness and understanding of AI content. By working with the C2PA and MediaWise, TikTok is taking a proactive approach to address the challenges posed by AI-generated content on its platform. These measures are crucial in promoting transparency, combating misinformation, and empowering users to make informed decisions about the content they engage with. As the first video sharing platform to implement these measures, TikTok is setting a precedent for other platforms to follow suit in prioritizing AI transparency and literacy.
