Microsoft has recently introduced a new feature aimed at simplifying the process of downloading Windows Store apps from the web. The software giant has developed an “undocked version of the Microsoft Store” that functions as a standalone executable for installing apps directly from the Microsoft Store. This new approach is designed to eliminate the complexities associated with locating Windows store apps on the web and installing them.
According to Microsoft Store developer Rudy Huyn, this new feature aims to reduce the entire process of downloading and installing Microsoft Store apps to just two clicks. However, upon conducting my own testing, it appears that the process still involves three clicks – downloading the app, opening the lightweight installer, and clicking on install in the prompt. While Microsoft has made some progress in simplifying the process by eliminating the prompt to open the Microsoft Store through web browsers like Chrome or Edge, there is still room for improvement.
Despite the benefits of the new lightweight installer, not all Microsoft Store apps currently support this feature. Apps like GroupMe and Snapchat can be downloaded using the standalone installer, but apps like Discord still redirect users to the Microsoft Store for installation. Additionally, the standalone installers do not include the full app installer, which is downloaded during the installation process.
Microsoft has reported that the new download method has resulted in a 12 percent increase in installations and a 54 percent increase in the number of apps launched after installation. This is promising news for developers who are eager to see more Windows users install and engage with their apps. As a result, Microsoft is now planning to expand this experiment to include “more products and markets,” according to Huyn.
Microsoft’s latest feature in Windows Store app downloads shows a step in the right direction in terms of simplifying the installation process for users and driving higher engagement with apps. While there are still some limitations and challenges to overcome, the overall impact on developers and users is positive. With further enhancements and wider implementation, this feature has the potential to transform the way users interact with Microsoft Store apps.
