After recent claims made by industry insider Jeff Grubb that a Dead Space 2 remake was in development at EA before being scrapped due to underwhelming sales of the first game, EA has officially denied these rumors. In a statement to IGN, EA stated, “We don’t normally comment on rumors but there is no validity to this story.” This contradictory response from EA leaves fans of the Dead Space series wondering about the future of a potential remake of the sequel.
According to Grubb, developers at EA Motive had reached the pre-production phase of a Dead Space 2 remake before the project was halted indefinitely. The decision to shelve the remake reportedly came as a result of disappointing sales of the first Dead Space remake, despite its positive critical reception. Grubb stated, “They were working on it. They were working on Dead Space 2, and they are no longer working on it,” revealing the disappointing news for fans eagerly anticipating a remastered version of the iconic 2011 sequel.
The reported cancellation of the Dead Space 2 remake coincides with at least a portion of EA Motive shifting their focus to the Battlefield series following the release of Battlefield 2042. The rest of the studio is said to be working on an Iron Man game, making the two projects the sole focus for developers at EA Motive. This shift in priorities may have played a role in the decision to halt production on the Dead Space 2 remake.
Fans of the Dead Space series were hopeful for a remake of the second installment after the success of the first remake. Last year, EA issued a survey gauging interest in remakes of Dead Space 2 and Dead Space 3, with the sequel being hailed as one of the best horror games ever made. However, it appears the response to the survey was not enough to sway the decision makers at EA. The disappointment among fans is palpable as they now face the reality that Dead Space 2 may never see the remastered treatment they had hoped for.
Despite the cancellation of the Dead Space 2 remake, the first entry in the series received praise from reviewers for its remastered version. Liam described the Dead Space remake as “brilliant. Enhanced. Upgraded. Put together carefully by caring hands.” The positive reception to the remastered Dead Space only adds to the disappointment surrounding the cancellation of its sequel.
The denial by EA of the Dead Space 2 remake rumors reinforces the uncertainty surrounding the future of the beloved survival-horror series. Fans can only hope that EA will reconsider their decision and give Dead Space 2 the remake treatment it deserves. Until then, the fate of the sequel remains uncertain, leaving fans to wonder what could have been.
