Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, has been in the spotlight for his controversial behavior in recent years. This behavior is believed to be playing a significant role in the declining sales of Tesla, according to corporate reputation tracking firm Caliber.

Recent survey data reported by Reuters shows that Tesla’s “consideration score” has dropped from 70 percent to 31 percent since November 2021. This metric measures consumer interest in brands based on whether they would buy or continue to buy products and services from Tesla. In contrast, rival electric vehicle manufacturers Audi, BMW, and Mercedes have seen slight increases in their consideration scores during the same period.

An additional study by analytics firm CivicScience revealed that 42 percent of US consumers view Elon Musk unfavorably, up from 34 percent in April 2022. This shift in perception can be attributed to Musk’s controversial conduct, which has been under scrutiny for promoting conspiracy theories and engaging in harmful rhetoric.

Caliber reports that 83 percent of Americans surveyed associate Tesla with Elon Musk. This strong association suggests that Musk’s reputation directly impacts the image of the Tesla brand. The CEO’s behavior is believed to be a contributing factor to Tesla’s reputational downfall in multiple countries, including the US, UK, and Australia.

The decline in Tesla’s reputation due to Musk’s behavior is thought to be affecting the company’s sales. Although it is not the sole factor, Tesla warned in January that its growth in 2024 might be notably lower than in previous years. Increased competition from other electric vehicle providers, manufacturing delays, and shipping disruptions have also been cited as reasons for declining sales.

Elon Musk’s controversial behavior is likely having a negative impact on Tesla’s sales and reputation. As the face of the company, Musk’s actions are closely tied to consumer perception of the Tesla brand. Moving forward, Tesla will need to address these issues and focus on regaining consumer trust to improve its sales performance in the future.
