Recently, Take-Two announced their plans to acquire Gearbox, the developers behind the popular Borderlands series. In addition to this acquisition, Take-Two also revealed that they are actively working on the next installment in the Borderlands franchise. While this news is exciting for shareholders, it leaves fans wondering about the specifics of what Gearbox has in store for the beloved looter shooter series.

It is worth noting that the most critically acclaimed Borderlands game was not developed by Gearbox and is not even a first-person shooter. Despite this, Borderlands 3, released in 2019, was a commercial success for Take-Two subcompany 2K. With over 19 million copies sold to shops, Borderlands 3 quickly became their fastest-selling game. However, with the five-year gap between the release of Borderlands 3 and the upcoming Borderlands movie, fans are eagerly anticipating news of a new game in the series.

Teasing the Future

While details about the next Borderlands game remain vague, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has hinted at something big on the horizon. In an interview with Ian Games Network back in February, Pitchford teased, “Clearly, we’re working on something. And I know what we’re working on, and holy shit… It’s the greatest thing we’ve ever done.” These cryptic words have left fans speculating about what the future holds for the franchise.

Despite today’s announcement serving primarily as a formality for investors, Take-Two did provide some insight into Gearbox’s current projects. According to the announcement, Gearbox is working on six key interactive entertainment projects, including five sequels, two of which are from the Borderlands and Homeworld franchises, as well as a new intellectual property. This news suggests that fans can expect a diverse range of games from Gearbox in the coming years.

Looking Ahead

With the Borderlands movie set to release in August, many are hoping that more details about the next game in the series will be revealed around that time. In addition to the main series games, Take-Two also mentioned a Borderlands spin-off titled Tiny Tina’s Wonderland, which could potentially be one of the sequels in development. However, there are other projects in the works that have sparked both excitement and concern among fans.

Aside from Borderlands, Take-Two highlighted other series that Gearbox is working on, including Risk Of Rain, Brothers In Arms, and unfortunately, Duke Nukem. The mention of a Duke Nukem movie in 2022 has left some fans wary, as the franchise has a tumultuous history in the world of gaming. As fans eagerly await more details about Gearbox’s upcoming projects, it is clear that the future of the Borderlands series is full of potential and uncertainty.
